Don't think Surmodics is just Cipher stents. Look at their customer list. Look at their partnerships. They are bringing to market major products for Macular Degeneration, Diabetes and biotech research.
They've set a land-speed record on creating a whole new line of business: advanced labware (i.e. petri dishes etc) with Corning and Donaldson Cos. This labware creates a more realistic environment for tissue cultures. Their opthalmic product, I-vation, is being eyed as the delivery device for macular degeneration drugs. Orthopedic on the horizon.But what about those long, FDA lead times? That's the beauty part: they get lucrative R&D contracts from drug and device clients to develop their products.
Merck drops them as a partner, makes the future uncertain. I believe there are other companies in the sector that will do better.
