So this new clothing store, a Peebles, opens in my small town... They blanket the mail with coupons, ads in the paper, everybody's excited (remember, really small town). So then it opens, and it's just a bunch of overpriced crap clothing with indistinguishable styling. There's a Wal-Mart and a Goody's in the same shopping center and both of them have a better selection of clothing at better price points. Now if you ever go in our Peebles (I only have twice) the two employees look absolutely shocked to have a customer. And they're not very surprised when the customer quickly leaves.
is peebles owned by stage stores?
stagestores.com:"Stage Stores brings nationally recognized brand name apparel, accessories, cosmetics and footwear for the entire family to small and mid-size towns and communities with over 720 stores in 38 states.""The company operates under the Bealls, Palais Royal, and Stage names throughout the South Central states, and under the Peebles name throughout the New England, Mid-Atlantic, Southeastern, and Midwestern states."
yes we have a beals here, in town, same story boring merchandise. JC penneys in the same strip mall has much better quality goods. But the stock has been performing as late and is the worst mark as a downsend in my caps score.
SSI owns the following: Bealls, Stages, Goody's, Palais Royal & Peebles. So when you talk about the Peebles' not being as nice as the Goody's... THEY'RE OWNED BY THE SAME COMPANY!!
This just shows that everyone needs to do their own due diligence before investing (not speculating, guessing, throwing darts, wishing, hoping, p(r)aying that they are right).
That all said, I feel better off with stronger companies: WMT, BKE, PSMT & ROST. These are all much better companies (imho) and it all comes down to what price you are able to purchase them at based on their values at that time.
Good luck,

When my original comment was made in 2007 Goody's was a separate independent (privately owned) company. It went bankrupt in 2008 and SSI bought the brand (nothing but the brand) and has been applying it to some new stores because it has higher recognition locally than Peebles or any of the other Stage brands do. Goody's was a better retailer but they messed up their credit and couldn't keep the bills paid. Our local Goody's store was kicking Peebles' butt, but the company folded and all the stores, profitable or not, went with it.
