Commodity prices may go up or down based on supply, weather, available land, even expanding demand for protein-rich "western" diets, but underlying every effort at intensification is ag. chemicals. Why? Demand is going up with exploding populations in the developing world, affluence effects in the 'middle class" economies, BRIC nations coming of age, etc. And, unlike genetically engineered seeds, industrialization of production using pesticides, etc, fertilizer actually appears to be cost effective and relatively safe to distribute widely. So, demand is going up, will keep going up, supply of arable land is harder to find and (more likely with climate change) going down. We can't find much new land, so we have to do more with what land we have. Fertilizer should be going through the roof.
