Teva is the undisputed leader in generic drugs....now. But the big pharmas are about to start producing them after their patents run out. Who has lower costs to market (and better time to market) than the Pfizers, Mereks and Novartises? This one will fade.

A few facts for you to consider:

Teva-Ivax's pipeline of products awaiting United States Food and Drug Administration approval stood at 148 drug proposals. Total brand sales of all these come to $84 billion a year, and for 46 of them, Teva is a first-filer, which means that it could get six-month exclusive marketing rights for its generic version.

Sales of Copaxone, Teva's proprietary drug for relapsing/remitting multiple sclerosis, continue to grow strongly

Not so sure about your statement (mind you, I do not have real in-depth knowledge on this industry), however, see the following excerpt regarding just the opposite trend occuring (from the FT):

'Merck announced plans in January to consider selling its generics division, allowing it to focus on innovation medicines and free up cash to help finance its purchase last year of Serono, the Swiss biotech group.

"This transaction will allow Merck to focus its resources on further growth within its pharmaceuticals and chemicals business sectors," said Karl-Ludwig Kley, Merck's recently appointed chief executive, in a statement on Sunday.'

I think that this will be more of the trend in the future, based upon my knowledge of structures in other consumer product industries (e.g., branded clothing, beverages, etc). However, if a democratic regime takes over D.C., then there may be less margins for all companies involved (both branded and generic).
