Theratechnologies got more bad news today, courteous of the FDA, that sent it's shares down 54% today (5/25/10). Theratechnologies is a Canadian Based company and you can learn more about it at ticker symbol TH.TO The PK version being sparser volume. Drugs require both effectivity and safety. Recent results seemed to exhibit the desired outcome on effectivity on Theratechnologies' Egrifta, known generically as tesamorelin, that is being tested to reduce abdominal fat build up in HIV patients who often have this trait from thier primary drug regime. The excess fat can lead to heart disease. Unfortunately, side effects of Egrifta include an increase in diabetes. The FDA usually defers to an advisory panel on issues regarding weighing side effects with the effect on the target disease. Since Egrifta had good effectiveness, but testing supported a lifetime committment to the drug, instead of short bursts, the side effects become more important. I don't know which way the FDA will call it. I'm playing the bottom bounce today and won't stay with this call very long. I would personally, however, think that given the options, a decent quality of life on an extended bases could be had even if one developed diabetes if one had aggressive HIV. WE'll see what the experts say when the time comes.
