Tele Norte Leste was spun out of Telebras to serve as the incumbent fixed-line telecom operator in "Region 1" within Brazil. Its territory covers 16 northern and eastern states, including Rio de Janeiro. The firm has 14.7 million customers, or about 97% of the market, within its territory. It also owns Oi, a wireless network that serves 11.2 million customers, or 27.2% of the wireless market within its territory. The firm also has 0.9 million high-speed Internet subscribers.
