Who is buying gold much these days? Gold is selling at large dollar amounts and people are selling there old gold. Just look at the TV commercials for this stuff. With all this gold being recycled, who needs to mine as much. A gold mining company (even if they mine other things, gold is gonna be one of their biggest sellers) is not going to perform very well until the market turns around and gold gets cheaper.
