stock is down 10% this morning. While $33 isn't the best buy price (try for under $30) this is a huge long-term winner because of its hepatitis C drug VX-950.
This morning Vertex announced the commencement of a broad phase 2 development program for VX-950. These trials are designed to provide definitive proof as to the efficacy of VX-950 in treating hepatitis C. Based on earlier reported data I expect that the final results of these studies will forever change the treatment paradigm in this awful disease. Today only half of patients are cured. I expect that VX-950 will raise that figure to over 90% This is a major medical advance. It is not too late for investors to profit. Based on my expectations that VX-950 will be a blockbuster drug, Vertex should be a $15-20 billion company in the next five to ten years. If you can buy shares in the $28-$32 range, you will get annual returns in excess of 20%. Those returns are essentially what you would have gotten over the long run by owning Amgen or Genentech early on. So buy Vertex and sock it away. You won't regret it.
A major medical advance may not mean a that their hepatitis C protease inhibitor will earn $10bil a year. The Hep C market is more like a $400mil dollar market and Schering-Plough SGP also has a hepatitis C protease inhibitor (SCH 503034) in Phase II trials. Most of the patients in this category are not insured and HepC and HIV drugs are mostly a give-away market. To understand a multibillion dollar drug you have to look at how Plavix and Lipitor have focused on a well-insured population. I don?t see Vertex marketing $10bil in new drugs anytime soon.
stock is down 10% this morning?
Nonsense waiting for $30. Clinical 2 trails results to be relesed soon, and wellness of participants is probably leaking out.
