Versant Corp.'s (VSNT) fourth-quarter net income rose to $2.09 million, or 56 cents a share, from $1.36 million, or 38 cents a share, a year earlier.

The Redwood City, Calif., database management systems company's revenue for the quarter ended Oct. 31 rose to $5.56 million from $4.59 million.

Versant Corporation is engaged in the designing, development, marketing and support of object database management systems, and provides related maintenance and professional services. Its products and services address the complex data management needs of enterprises and providers of products requiring data management functions.

In addition to its product offerings, to assist users in their development and deployment of applications based on the Versant Object Database (VOD) and FastObjects, the Company offers a variety of services, including consulting, training, and technical support services.

Its VOD product is used primarily by larger enterprises, which have large-scale data management requirements, such as technology providers, telecommunications carriers, government defense agencies and defense contractors, healthcare companies and companies in the financial services and transportation industries.

On February 1, 2006, Versant sold WebSphere consulting practice to Sima Solutions.
