Verizon Wireless just doesn't get it. They sell crippled phones, nickle and dime you and then have the audacity to tell you it's the manufacturer who doesn't offer services on their phones. Cingular/AT&T will win over lots of people with the iPhone as disgruntled Verizon customers leave.

Very true. Every one of my friends who had Verizon are disgusted with it for one reason or another. Many are disppointed in phone features and high prices. Personally, I was cheated out of over $500 by their billing and customer service departments. I don't know anyone who has stayed with them for a decent period of time. The iPhone will caust AT&T to blow Verizon out of the water, kind of like fishing with dynamite.

If VZW customers are 'disgruntled' why to they have the lowest churn rate in the industry by far? Wait til the Apple zombies get a glimpse of 'high speed data' on T's EDGE network. The Mac crowd loves to say a Mac is great 'because it just works'. Will they settle for 56k speeds while they surf on their $500 iPhone with a data plan of $80-$100 per month. Can you hear me now?

True. They indulge in a lot of negative activity (crippled phones, bad customer service, filing lawsuits without giving notice of infringement to the accused party) and spend a lot of money on things they feel will do well. What happens in the future and what one feels will hapen can be two very different stories.

I couldnt help smiling when I heard that the International Trade Consortium had banned them from importing phones with Qualcomm's 3G chipset because it violated Broadcom's patents. I hope Vonage came to their mind when that happened :)

Now they are playing politics by trying to lobby President Bush to lift the ITC ban. I hope they get their just desserts.

You're way off the mark on VZW. They have the lowest churn (customers leaving them and going else where) in the industry. They continually invest the most in there network and have the fewest outages dead spots and best cellular service bar none. Most of the major rating services seem to agree year after year.

VZW was offered the Iphone and it was a brilliant move not to go with Apple. Apple wants and is getting part of the service revenue from At&t, and wanted the same from Verizon. Why should the handset maker get anything? Screw that if Motorola comes out with a hot handset they may ask for the same. Edge and AT&T continually rank at the bottom of the pack. A desperate move by them, they may steal a few customers but in the long run VZ will win out.

"Why should the handset maker get anything?"

How much market share is the iPhone expected to take in the first year alone? I think there's several million reasons right there. People are tired of being locked in to the phones that the wireless providers offer. What if Verizon told you what kind of computer you could use on "their" FiOS network? Are you going to buy their computer with only the services they offer you? The iPhone, though only in it's first incarnation, is going to turn the wireless market on its head - and it's about time. Verizon has spent too much money building out FiOS and it will take a decade or longer to recoup the costs - if they can. In the mean time, you can bet that more alternatives and competition will come. Verizon was simply attempting to protect what they have. Ten years from now, FiOS may be obsolete - then what?

The hype has died down and T and AAPL have not met the projected #'s. During the first two weeks more people were porting out of VZW to AT&T but that is over and VZW is again stealing T customers. The wireless provider does not offer the phone the handset makers make the phone for the company which in turn is offered by the cell company. I think the iphone is a cool device, but I would be locked into the crappy Cingular network, no thanks. So if i want the iphone i'm losked into a sub par network. Why do you think jobs went to VZ 1st?

BTW I recently converted to FIOS triple play. So far it blows away Cable Vision the internet is faster, and the picture on my TV all look like HD even the standard channels, and I get to watch the NFL Network since its in the basic package. Imagine that and it's roughly $40.00 per month cheaper.

You may be right it may be outdated at some point, but i doubt it and, they will have fiber to millions of houses that other technology can flow through. I know about 6 families that have converted and they love it so far.

FIOS obsolete? Keep in mind American isn't even 100% broadband with DSL and Cable yet. We still have many many families here that still use dinosaur age dial up while other countries like Japan have average download speeds of over 10mb/s. (Taken from speedtest.net). FIOS will become the new standard in the future just like cable and dsl are becoming the new standard today.

In fact Zeta to your point only 52% of the US uses broadband. Asian countries like Korea are almost 100% broadband.

FiOS obsolete NJHowie? You should take more time to look into this industry before making statements like that. Do you appreciate what a wild and inaccurate statement that is? Fiber obsolete? Unlimited bandwidth to the home and eventually to businesses over an all fiber network may be obsolete in 10 years? Please.

If Vz fails with FiOS (and it won't just look at all the commentary from the cable companies) they will accomplish one thing. They will force the cable companies to once again invest into their own networks.

verizon wireless is merely one part (not even entirely Verizon's part) of the picture, their broadband and emerging video markets are what will reap huge earnings for this company. Their initial rollout costs are finally being recouped and in their first year as a television provider has reached a million customers and ranks in the top 10 video providers. That is a very impressive jump. This is with only a portion of their footprint rolled out. Price per home keeps dropping while customer base keeps growing = big earnings. I would look at this to raise throughout 2008 and probably a few years past that.

I wonder how a company who, as you say, is so bad have such a low churn rate. Can you explain that?

Could you be wrong?
