Whiting Petroleum engages in the exploration and production of natural gas and oil in the Permian Basin; Rocky Mountains; the Mid-Continent; Michigan, and the Gulf Coast. It was founded in 1980 and was a subsidiary of Alliant Energy until 2003. The Celero acquisition in 2005 transformed the firm from a natural-gas company to an oil company, as oil now accounts for 78% of its proved reserve base, and natural gas accounts for the remainder.
