Unedited Excerpt:
The best companies to own for the long haul are ones that share a few key characteristics:
•   They provide a necessary product or service.
•   They build difficult to surmount barriers to competition.
•   They directly reward their shareholders for the risks of investing, and
•   They don't over-leverage their balance sheets with too much debt.

One of the few companies that fit all those criteria is trash kingpin Waste Management (NYSE: WM).

Here's competition for you: my mother in a honda crv, her garbage and recycling all packed up snug in the back behind her. She goes to the local landfill herself because she got fed up with paying the extortionate prices wm charges. Total time of trip: 30 minutes, and that incorporated into her weekly errand/shopping run. Want more? THat's her friend driving just ahead of her in a pick-up truck. Where'd the friend get the motivation to circumvent wm? Her son-in-law doing exactly the same. As for the balance sheet, how much debt does a company have to have before you consider them over-leveraged? Waste management is carrying a truckload of debt, Stary.
