Exxon is an excellent long term investment. XOM is the default pick for institutional investors when looking at oil stocks. If you expect oil to outperform the market (which I do) then XOM should soar as the big boys buy more. The recent price run up may cause short term jitters as XOM isn't currently excessively cheap (nor particularly expensive). Yet on the other hand, historically when the price passes $80 (now $79) they tend to split the stock. When that occurs you may also see a handsome boost to the dividend.
