Looking for a little gain here, nothing dramatic, but a gain is a good thing.

Multiple is salivating. The merger announcement of RTI shed more market cap that the acquisition cost? The merger shifts Alcoa even more into finish products which is their growth and future. Multiples will rise. This is no longer your old line non-growth company.

Closing (streamlining) of less than efficient smelting operations over the course of the next year should place the company closer to operating margins of their largest competitors as well as allow them to pay down some of their outstanding debt. Many other factors such as the possibility of conflict, decline in Chinese output, etc. have the possibility to affect pricing, in my opinion positively.

Beyond 5 years is difficult to predict, but I see advances in transportation efficiency as can be seen in Tate Services new LNG container carrier fleet. This could allow processing of raw materials at more cost-efficient locations and more availability of finished products in emerging markets.

With the United States Government convinced that it can legislate physics, automakers will be forced to push vehicle mileage rates to significantly higher levels in a fairly short amount of time. Taking the charge, Ford has decided to approach the issue by incorporating more aluminum into its business. With a lighter weight than steel, aluminum offers benefits that I believe automakers will find increasingly attractive as legislative mandates loom closer. Answering to these calls, Alcoa has presented itself as a reliable source for aluminum for the auto industry. Alcoa has already projected for increasing levels of aluminum in vehicles in the future due to circumstances like its agreement with Ford to provide aluminum for Ford's new F-150 truck. In addition to this, Alcoa is also witnessing an increasing demand for aluminum-lithium alloys in aerospace components. New airplane designs demand different alloys, and Alcoa is willing to supply the industry with its expertise and manufacturing capabilities. Alcoa has done a remarkable job at turning its business around. Going forward, I have a feeling that Alcoa's management will continue to guide shareholders through a dramatic shift in Alcoa's business. Long term.

With China and Americas recent emissions pledge an easy way to meet these targets is via the increased use of aluminium in cars to reduce the fuel consumption. AA plays to the American market well (being US based) Vs global peers RUSAL (Russian and thus tarnished at present) and Norsk Hydro. As energy is a huge input into sheet metal cheap shale gas also is an advantage.

The company's value has risen based on necessary management moves over the last few years to cut costs and reduce supply. But the underlying metals market is still very weak and volatile. I think AA might be an ok long term play, since they are the big dog and aluminum isn't going away. But in the short term, the stock has gone up too far, too fast.
