The energy parts business has already had it's run and until solar and wind power gets a real commitment from government it will just continue without real growth.

What does ABB do or make, and why is it going to be important in the next five years?
ABB makes robotics systems, circuit breakers (of the giant-sized sort), power control and distro systems. They are also active in manufacturing consulting, water systems, and supply chain integration. (The company currently buys about US$18B of products from vendors--so this is something they'd better get right!) I know it's common to point to the big players and say, "INFRASTRUCTURE!" and leave it at that, but I think there is a lot to yelling "INFRASTRUCTURE!" in a crowded marketplace. If you own a factory, you need smart meters and power controls which make you more efficient--ABB does that. If you are building a giant wind farm in the middle of Texas, you need a way to get that energy to market--ABB does that. If you want to build a Big Smoky Coal Plant, you also need what ABB has.
The good: Its greatest sales are in the European markets, and sales in NA and Asia have been on a steady climb up for the past three years. Annual sales and Gross Operating Profit have all increased in the last four years. As of Dec 2008, they had 6.3B on hand in cash; and current assets exceed total liabilities (current and non-current). Net cash from continuing operations is also up (although net income is down approx $600m from last year--I think cash from continuing ops is more important--if I'm wrong please tell me).
The bad: I'm not happy about EPS estimates on the decline. But we knew 2009 was going to be a tough year, right?
Correct me if I read the financial statements incorrectly, but it looks like ABB has what it takes to get through this year.

I'm buying this stock as a play on Obama's infrastructure building plan. Until someone comes up with another means of transporting electricity, I think this is a safe play.
