American Capital, Ltd. (ACAS)
The Company is a business development company that also serves as publicly traded alternative asset manager.
Recs
ACAS should have positive momentum coming out from their Q3 earnings. The news from ACAS since the end of Q3 has been positive with multiple exits at prices that are favorable for ACAS. The growth of their equity portfolio, plus dividends received in the quarter, should help to boost their balance sheet for Q4.
Recs
Mark downs have been heavy and the price still reflects significant BK possibility. As likelihood of BK fades and portfolio values improve, PPS will be more reflective of NAV
Recs
Solid operating plan and long-term track record that will return to stability (as a smaller version of itself) if it can weather the current environment and sort out the balance sheet.
Recs
This stock is incredibly beaten down. Price to Book value is .37, which is crazy right now. And it continues to bring in Free Cash Flow. This is another company that survived the recession and will bounce back nicely.
Recs
Selling at 45% of book. Assets reflect ownership of portfolio companies which will do good in a good economy.

Maverick we're in a flat spin
Pull Goose, pull out!

Business development, and alternative asset managers, are coming back into their own, now that credit has loosened up. I expect this company and another that I own to resume paying me dividends in the high teens very soon.

At a loss as to why this has an above average CAPS rating. This company has no chance of outperforming the S&P anytime in the near future that I can see. Maybe after they sell off everything and consolidate a bit they might have a chance........but then again I'm still a rookie at all this so what the heck do I know.

Excellent Business plan

M & A market is turning around and ACAS has 277 middle-market companies "for sale". These companies are now valued at the bottom of the barrel but this will change over the next 24-36 months with the usual leverage effect.
Debt is a problem but as the portfolio companies gain value, the debt will become less threatening. Chapter11 is not a threat....what bank wants 277 companies to deal with ? ?
These guys are good operators and they will rise to the top with the tide.
I just wish the management/insiders would stop the never-ending selling even if they have too much ACAS in their portfolios (Hello Ira !). Philip Harper is the only one who is a believer !

There is no fundamental reason for American Capital to be spiking in share price. There is no fundamental reason many of the underwater sub $5 stocks are spiking the past few weeks. There is NO fundamental reason I upthumbed ACAS. I have a theory on these sub-$5 stocks that are spiking. It could be labeled a conspiracy theory. It is not related to financials specifically. At any rate, my theory applies to ACAS and either I'll be right, for no fundamental reason, or I'll be wrong and some sanity will return to the market. Right now, I'm betting on an overload of insanity. Negative $13 EPS, Book value 1/3rd of a year ago. Highly leveraged, stopped paying dividends six months ago. Bring it on!

M and A activitity will pick up sharply
Recs
Low price to book, low price to operating cash flow. Plus they perform the type of financing that banks aren't going to be willing do.

Bleeding Cash. Cannot find sources for new money.

Seeing gains from shedding portfolios, 700million ytd and counting.

down, but not out

Very low for the value. The dividends were fantastic for current holders - just need to get in this at the right time and you're riding with virtually a free ride.
Recs
Stock is low and will double by the end of the year.

it will come backk along with the oil companies
