ACI is definitely undervalued with their 33% growth rate sporting a PEG of .60. PBK/PSR also are both below 1. Shares popped today with their earnings coming soon, a good sign. I look for strong sales numbers, as they have increased sales quarter over quarter very consistently. Looking for ACI to be in the mid-20's.

It is down too much. It pays a div. -- that they should raise. It can/will grow its exports. From their website:
Kinder Morgan and Arch Coal Sign Throughput Agreement to Further Expand Coal Terminal Network

HOUSTON & ST. LOUIS--Jan. 24, 2012-- Kinder Morgan Energy Partners, L.P. (NYSE: KMP) today announced plans to invest approximately $140 million to further expand its coal handling facilities along the Gulf Coast. Concurrently, Arch Coal (NYSE: ACI) has signed a long-term throughput agreement with KMP that will help support the expansion of these export facilities. Also, Arch and KMP are in final discussions to include, in the throughput agreement, port space for coal shipments at KMP-owned facilities on the East Coast.

ACI is set to outperform after being beaten down to a low. I would rate it as a "Dog of the Dow" stock that will grow.

i own some options on this in real life, it was one of those one's--you wait one day and you can pick'em up for 20% less. I have no problems holding this for awhile and I am still long energy and the market. this industry has just been beaten down and I probably should have waited. I should not have gotten in, just something I saw that looked like a good deal

Looks really, really good at $15.

The coal industry will continue to do well going forward. Green energy sources cannot possibly keep up with the growing demand for electricity. Environmentalist are putting up a good fight against coal but I think the jobs that the coal industry provides will keep it humping for many more years. Coal is too abundant and too cheap. We are going to use it for something. The metrics for Arch look great. At $15 it is trading near tangible book value with a nice dividend to boot. It is also a possible merger candidate with the recent consolidation activity in the industry.

Coal will be around for many years. With generators
powered by coal China will be the biggest consumer and Japan will consumed as well. Long on ACI and a good dividend as well. Buy low and low. I am long here.

Purchased shares in the $16s in real life.
As of 9/29/11 close:
PPS = 15.27
Book value = $16.73
Price to Book = 0.92
PEG of 0.01
Yielding ~2.89%
I see growth with ACI in the sector with their recent acquisition of ICO.
I think they overpaid for ICO in the short term, but I think with ICO's met coal will grow the bottom line.
Recs
There is huge demand for coal in China and India. A slow economy may hold it back, but we won't be using any substitute within the next 5 years that will be as cheap for them. It even pays a dividend of over 2%.

With the acquisition of International Coal Group, it is now the 5th largest coal producer in the world and 2nd largest producer of metalurgical coal in the US. They also now have a farily decent dividend which they slowly raised for years.

Dumped my ANR in favor of ACI. A more mature company, I think, and a little dividend to sweeten the pot.

After this Japan disaster, look for alternative energy from Nuclear to coal as Japan rebuilds.

If people are worried about the future of Nuclear power generation due to the current issues in Japan, what will be the next most reasonable source? Coal of course - Load up...
