• Appalachian coal has high production costs, which are expected to rise even more given geology, regulation, and labor issues.
• The ICG deal stretched Arch's balance sheet, a problem given that weak coal prices are stifling Arch’s ability to generate strong cash flows.
• The ICG acquisition and shifting production mix in Appalachia are increasing Arch's exposure to metallurgical coal prices, which are highly volatile and depend on the cyclicality of global macroeconomics.

Coal is so industrial revolution. Are we so completely lacking in engineering skills that the only advances we can make in burning coal in hundreds of years is water cooled furnaces and supercritical units? Yes IGCC, but it that doesn't work out well. Just ask Edwardsport or Kemper County.

Burning coal creates CO2 more than any other generation source.

It leaves heavy metals in the air, in the ground water and in ash ponds across the country. Things like Mercury, chromium, lead, arsenic, cadmium.

It generates more NOx and SOx than any other generation source.

It's inefficient and expensive compared to natural gas combined cycle.

It's labor and resource intensive to burn. Think coal yards, rail, pulverizers, scrubbers, SCRs, operators...

We are shutting down coal plants and not building new ones.

Coal is an anachronism kept in place by lobbyists from places where they still dig it out of the ground. It's just a matter of time before we stop burning altogether.

This may not be the absolute bottom, but the risk/reward at this point make Arch/Alpha/Walter interesting speculative bets.

Coal isn't going anywhere. It's too cheap and many other countries currently using for energy. Just wait until they remove export ban.

Wow. 2011 stock was $35, now $4. Book value $12 !! Even so, with declining revs and gaping losses, it can't go up.

Coal has hit rock bottom, but they will still be using it in Asia.

ACI will outperform the S&P 500 because it is currently below its historic price average

Thumbed up for the same reason I thumbed up ANR today. Essentially, coal's going to make a comeback, and these two have low debt and low production costs.

They are going to continue to struggle as long as there is very very cheap natural gas, unless they find a way to cheaply export it. Also our president is tightening a noose around coal stocks necks which is not helping their case

The Bears have too much power over the coal industry. Their cycle will switch out as people see that they are not doomed.

Given the droughts and very high temperatures this summer, I anticipate a very cold and wet winter. That should bode well for coal companies, including ACI. It's also more than 50% in the last 6 months. I think it has a lot of upside if it can cut internal costs.
