Patent control/licensing doesn't usually impress me. MDVX.OB and VHC seem to think that patent control is about sueing large companies such as Microsoft and then celebrating when you get a Marksman ruling that your "suit" may have merit. Try prosecuting it to conclusion before you cheer. Acacia Research as a 3 star stock doesn't get much respect either, but making money off of licensing can be one of the most lucrative markets to be in. Yes, it does require some overhead monitoring and fighting for your patents. If a work around can be designed, it will be by someone. The margins, however, are outstanding! Acacia hasn't had the greatest of revenue quarters of late, but no debt, positive cash flow and low overhead it has good potential with the right combination. Recent acquisitions are in some technology areas that could be important. Even in cases Acacia loses, they still typically acquire additional portfolios or customers.

When you talk about patent licensing firms you probably think of Rambus. Acacia is just like the former with an experienced team of executives acquiring new patents left and right.

Acacia has been increasing it's patent portfolio every Quarter and Revenues are up 50% Year Over Year.

Intellectual Property is big business with more and more companies rushing to claim ownership of their technologies. Due to losing a recent court case the stock trades at a discount.

If anything, pick this one up for CAPS.

Acacia has recently reached positive agreements/settlements with AOL & Trend Micro... It has also recently entered into license agreements with Toshiba Corporation and Siemens. Since Acacia Research completed its split with CombiMatrix Corporation in August of 2007, it is poised to take advantage its patent protection and patent licensing focus...

ACTG sells well-below the fair value of probable cash flows from its existing IP (intellectual property) portfolios. The company currently has 5-6 home-run type patent portfolios, any of which could generate more in license revenue than it's entire revenue base of last year. Even better, it is acquiring additional patent portfolios, in most cases, with no capital commitment. It is a difficult company to analyze and value for professional investors based on traditional methods, limiting demand for institutional ownership, which has helped keep the stock at bargain levels. For an investor that can hold on for a couple of years to see ACTG's patent portfolio turn into licesensing revenue, it would be hard to find a better stock for risk vs reward investment.
