Aeterna Zentaris, Inc. (USA) (AEZS)

CAPS Rating:
***

A growing global biopharmaceutical company focused on endrocrine therapy and oncology, in drug discovery, development and commercialization.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Cetrorelix in phase 3 for BPH in the US. AEterna has world rights (except Japan) for prostate hypertrophy and endomitriosis. Easy to administer, rapid onset without flare ups and the theory behind it is based on very simple and 'old' principles that make this a relatively safe drug candidate. This seems like a very promising drug that would be simple and cheap to use. Has the potential to replace surgery in many countries where patients have little access to surgery (developing countries and for poor patients in the US?). It could also be a logical first line drug before refering patients to surgery regardless of insurance coverage. Insurance companies would be more then willing to pay for this if it can prevent or delay expensive surgery.

Ozarelix is in phase 2 and should also be a relatively safe drug candidate.

They are covered by a bunch of analystes who all seem to like the company.

Market cap of 88 million at 1.5$ a share. This is an anomaly and cannot last although I felt the same thing at 2.5 a share! They don't have a significant partner yet for Centrorelix but should have no trouble getting one on favarable terms. Big pharma is not exactly full of exciting drug candidates.

They did push back some timelines recently and this could explain part of the exit of many shareholders? I just keep on buying!

Short term: This stock is probable to Underperform. The Company provided updated guidance for the 2007 total expected burn in a range of $25-$27 million.

Long term: This will be a hot stock to own. Potential for base case peak annual sales of over $500 million in the United States market alone; lower sales could reach $200 million.
