Early 5G networks have been rolling out across the country as wireless companies jockey for bragging rights to the fastest networks.
But this first 5G wave has been criticized and called hype... and with good reason. It doesn’t implement the full power of 5G. That’s still to come.
Full 5G will be so transformational, it’s had experts telling us it will be the last major wireless network — ever.
5G will transform and disrupt industries, making some obsolete and creating new ones. Billions of dollars are yet to be spent, millions of jobs to be created and trillions in new wealth to be made.
The future of technology trends from the internet of things to cloud computing to smart cars, automation and artificial intelligence all hinge on getting 5G done. Plus, 5G will enable new tech trends no one has conceived yet.
But 5G won’t be just one network. It will include existing wireless technology, along with new frequencies and infrastructure. Stuff like millimeter wave, small cellphone sites and even existing Wi-Fi and satellite communications will be folded into 5G — and it will appear seamless for users.
5G will be a “network of networks.” Devices and infrastructure will need to be able to work on multiple radio frequencies and even be able to fold many of them together into a single logical communications channel.
This will create huge demand for high-performance antennas embedded in everything from your smartphone to your automobile.
That means San Diego antenna company Airgain Inc. (NASDAQ: AIRG) has a clear profit signal!
Founded in 1995, Airgain specializes in advanced antenna tech useful in high-performance wireless communications. The company supplies multiple markets, satisfying the need for antenna tech in consumer, enterprise and automotive markets.
Airgain is an antenna warrior. The company’s 129 employees are spread across multiple continents, with manufacturing facilities in Arizona and contract manufacturers in China. The company has amassed an intellectual property portfolio that includes 270 patents and applications.
On the consumer side, that includes everything you might have in your home, from routers to smart TVs to security cameras and home automation. Enterprise uses for Airgain’s products include smart utilities, kiosks, ATMs, femtocells and much more. In the automotive sector, Airgain’s antennas are found in connectivity devices embedded in mass transportation, truck fleets, police fleets, warehouse vehicles and new automobiles.
The company works with big names you have heard of. That includes telecommunications companies like AT&T and Comcast, networking equipment companies like Comcast, satellite communications companies like Viasat and Hughes, consumer device companies like Roku and Samsung and automakers like Renault.
Right now, AIRG is valued at a paltry $94 million, but the company generated over $55 million in revenue last year and reports that it has more than a third — $35 million — of its valuation in the form of cash in the bank, with no debt.
Airgain is a very attractive buy right now. Many devices these days must have multiple antennas in order to communicate using different forms of wireless technology. The more advanced the technology becomes, generally the more antennas are needed — and Airgain gets a chance to sell more and more antenna content as this occurs. Furthermore, winning a design in a new device is sticky... the company is likely to be the antenna provider in a slot it wins for the production life of the device.
With new standards coming out, like Wi-Fi 6 and 5G, antenna design becomes more important than ever. With the huge demand for new, higher-performing antennas, the market Airgain addresses is set to grow by an order of magnitude.
