Succeeded in their third attempt to gain U.S. clearance for Bydureon, a once-weekly version of Amylin’s diabetes shot.

FDA doesn't approve convenience....

AMLN will benefit, or not, from FDA decisions in late January. My regard for the stock rests in part on the feedback of longtime users of their diabetes treatments who have used other treatments and are happiest with AMLN's for reasons beyond what the approval process measures. When a product is really loved by its clients, that is a good start. I have no insight into the FDA decision but the very real prospect of a good outcome should at a minimum result in a lot of short covering before February, so it should outperform the market up until decision day at least.

Diabetes epidemia is still only in its very early stage. It is a growing health problem in developed countries, but this growth will become exponential once emerging countries get more & more affected. Byetta, and hopefully Bydureon, should have a slice of this growing market. And I have no doubt this slice will become larger within the next years.

My main opinion is that their are too many competitors for their top drug in the works and their own study stated that their drug did not perform as well.

betting on drug approval soon

FDA is going to make Amylin do the dance - as they justifiable should, it's their JOB!! Nonetheless, long-term injectable insulins appear to be the next wave of diabetes treatment until a convenient, comfortable, pancreatic implant is developed, and Amylin is there. Shortly upon approval, Bre'r Icahn may start pressing the board to sell the company or at least find a partner willing to engage in a more aggressive marketing strategy because several other companies, including diabetes-powerhouse Novo Nordisk, will soon enter the competition. Marketing will also be critical because most diabetics who have a treatment that works are loathe to jump to anything new. Price and insurance support will also become on-going factors. Finally, as promising as this new technology is, if an unpredictable downside emerges [a la Vioxx], Amylin will get trampelled in the rush for the exist [and law suits] despite having other, less celebrated products.
And to think, they draw their basic component from Gila Monster saliva. Do they "farm" Gila Monsters? Do they use spitoons?

FDA will approve Exanatide-LAR tomorrow or later this year. Bright future.
