Extremely well positioned to take advantage of China's investment in wind and smart grid tech. Relationship and history with U.S. DOE will pay off in smart grid updates and completely revamping/updating existing grid with superconducting wire that can transmit 10 times more power with same general thickness and no electromagnetic leakage. Potential ROI is extremely high. Look for net profits to continue to expand each quarter.

I think that the stock market is going to start heading lower soon. If and when it does, companies like this with little in the way of earnings are going to get killed.

American Superconductor Corp is presumably positioned to take advantage of the rising interest in wind power. Revenues have grown dramatically over time, but profits stink. The company hopes to generate a $1.5 million profit for fiscal year 2010, but this is hardly enough to justify its $963.8 million market cap (which is more than 4 times book). This stock is likely to be incredibly volatile. The key is sell on the upswings and buy back stock on the downswings.

Energy must be transferred efficiently and solar plants and wind turbines are often placed in distant, remote locations. Without superconducting wire and modifying the grid, the green revolution is in vain.

It has a World Wide footprint When it Comes to Wind and a National need in its Superconductor products. Purchasing now may very well seem early, but the move will be dramatic and impossible to catch when the upside sets in.

AMSC doesn't receive a high CAPS rating, but this is to be expected because of the company's size and reliance on a niche technology. The share price is volatile but the company is sitting in a technological sweet spot with respect to wind power and superconductors for electric grid upgrades -- both of which will be growth areas in the not-too-distant future. Possibly the real future for this innovative but risky company is to be acquired by a "big guy".
