My wife and her co-workers shop here all the time. She says the coupons are what brings her back, 20% off etc.

The management expressed positive signs after the recent quarterly result and mentioned that AnnTaylor continued to offer compelling product assortments that drove increased full-price selling. But the numbers articulated a different story. Even the company accepted that LOFT division suffered due to unbalanced product assortment which did not offer enough updated classics or color. While the same was the case in the prior results, when the company cut prices to clear out slow-selling fashions in LOFT division.

Company’s net sales for first quarter advanced merely by 4.3%, on the back of expansion of store base and continued growth of factory and internet businesses. But this would seem better in front of comparable store sales which reduced by 3.3% which reflected expected softness at LOFT, which was down 9%. In order to sustain the top-line, company is constantly involving in promotions which are hampering the margins and thereby declining net profits.

In spite of all this and its concerns regarding potential macroeconomic softening, it is positive on EPS guidance and reiterates its fiscal 2007 guidance of $2.15 to $2.25. Moreover it said it will launch a new concept in fall 2008 but did not offer a name or details of the concept except to say that it is targeting a "very attractive untapped opportunity in the market today." Other initiatives include plans for expanding the celebrations line by opening additional stores and testing strategic initiatives for this business to further accelerate its growth. Also it is introducing a new Ann Taylor Beauty collection of fragrance, and bath and body products by early next year.

In the recent quarter, it opened net 10 LOFT stores and repurchased about 4.2 million shares, which will create shareholder value. Though the company can face soft results in the second quarter, it should show improvements in second half of the year. Thus it invites some mixed feelings, but for a futuristic investor the outlook seems prospective.

Everyone who works with me buys half their wardrobe here, and the couponing really drags them back into the stores. I think they'll run out the teeny-bopper Limited Express unwearable crap.

I love Ann Taylor. Their last few seasons have featured beautiful, classy dresses and suits. Plus, I was really impressed with CEO Kay Krill's interview in the WSJ (9/15/06). She has identified her two key market segments, "Ann" and "Loft" women (professional/conservative and casual/fun, respectively) and is keeping them separate with Ann Taylor stores and Ann Taylor Loft stores. Focused leadership and a return to core competancies bode well for a promising future.
