CAPS Rating:
***

The Company and its operating subsidiaries are engaged in the business of extracting, processing and marketing coal from deep and surface mines, located in the Central and Northern Appalachian regions of the United States.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Longs entering north of $40 likely to be looking down a metallugic coal shaft on this one soon; expecting 20% retracement soon.

Assuming the Cleveland Cliffs merger goes through by the end of 2008, this stock is woefully underpriced. It should continue to go up for the next several months, particularly as closing gets closer.

The only real reason I can see for worry about the merger is if Alpha gets a better offer, in which case the price will go up further.

Share price does not yet reflect the value offered by CLF. Only reasons I can think of are that people either expect the share price of CLF to fall or they expect the deal to fall through. I expect the opposite in both cases.

Cliffs got a steal at this price! 1 of 3 things will happen...

1) The deal goes through as is and I make money.

2) ANR realizes that they could have got more! Cliffs ups their offer for the deal to go through and I make money.

3) A better bid emerges and I make money.

I'm betting that the 3rd option is most likely, because it makes way too much sense for one of the international steel producers to protect supply chain costs, especially given the weak us dollar. If that doesn't happen though, the combined company may even be more attractive to an international suitor. (especially since a large chunk of it is pre-financed with a weak US dollar) I own stock in both so a buyout of the combined company would be most attractive, but a lot of other good companies would have to be asleep at the wheel for that to happen, or have the guts to feel they can win a bidding war for the combined company later.
