CAPS Rating:
***

A clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on discovering, developing and commercializing oral drugs in four major therapeutic areas: cardiovascular, central nervous system, inflammatory and metabolic diseases.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other players to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Currently in the prescription weight loss market patients have 2 options: Xenical or Meridia. Xenical blocks fat absorption in the gut by blocking an enzyme that breaks long chain fatty acids into smaller pieces (thus blocking the ability of the gut to absorb fat). The downside is the more fat in ...More

Watch this little bugger! They have their hands in some very revolutionary meds and have good partners. My target is 9.00 by the end of Q2 of 2010.

Feeling very confident that Lorcaserin, Arena's anti-obesity drug will receive FDA approval. The Phase III trials have been going well and the independent monitoring of Lorcaserin shows no signs of cardiac heart valve issues. I expect that Arena will have a strategic partner lined up by the end of this year for Lorcaserin. My educated guess is that they are in negotiations with a three or more prospective partners and are looking for the right deal for the partnership. In addition, Arena's pipeline is very compelling with the Insomnia drug now in Phase 2B trials showing well and I expect this to move into Phase III by the end of 2008. If all goes well Arena will have huge upside within the next two years.

Biotech stock, hauled out and shot to near cash value. Principal drug is anti-obesity Locaserin, in Phase 3 trials ending March 09. Making a good deal with a major biotech, let alone skating through to FDA approval would change the perpetual bearish sentiment here.

Among the publicly traded small biotechs, this has the most promising looking anti-obesity drug that I know of. The dose-response curves on their stage 2 clinical trials are totally pretty. Unless they were faked (and I haven't _seen_ any evidence of that) I'd give a 90% probability that the drug will be effective. It will be a drug that people will be taking for the long term, because the weight does come back when you stop taking it. Given this and the obesity epidemic, the market for this drug is absolutely enormous.

So why is this stock trading so low? One reason is that there is a legitimate concern about the safety of the drug. It is related to an earlier drug that caused heart valve damage in a minority of patients. The drug was pulled from the market and the maker sued for a lot of money. In response to this safety concern Arena is doing all the right things. They are doing a multiple year long stage three trial, which is practically unheard of, six weeks being the standard. They are doing echocardiagrams looking for valve damage in the participants of the trial. At the one year point they had to discontinue the trial if there were signs of heart damage. They announced earlier this year that they are going into the second year. Between this, and the molecular design of the drug, which is such that it does interact with the brain/appetite form of the receptor but not the heart form of the receptor, I'd say there's a better than 90% chance that the drug is safe.

So - 90% chance of safety, 90% chance of effectiveness for a target market that is probably the largest drug market that exists in America. Why is the price is down 2/3rds in a year? The reasons I think are several. Wall St. expects a company at this stage to be bought out by big pharmo. It has not been. Big Pharmo is still a little scared by the phen/fen lawsuits. Perhaps this company has not been courting big pharmo either. They actually do seem to have enough money to get all the way through the stage III trial, which if successfull will make them the happy happy recipients of a bidding war like we haven't seen for ages. Wall St. is also depressed in general, and the speculative money that tends to support long shots like new drug stocks is fleeing in particular. Finally, you really do need something close to a PhD in a biomedical field to understand _why_ this is likely not going to turn into another phen/fen disaster. (Though actually the lives phen/fen saved by preventing side effects of obesity is likely much more than the lives it lost due to cardiac complications. If surgery was evaluated to the same standards as drugs were, there's no way even the stomach banding procedures would be on the market, nevermind the full bypasses!)

Anyway, I just bought another 2000 shares. It is up to about 10% of my portfolio now. I normally wouldn't do so much on a biotech. It's a damn harsh business - much easier to make money on software or even consumer electronics. But in this case the up side is so large, and by my reckoning so likely, I'm loading up.

Take care,
Jim
