ATEC appears to have a good product and if all the people with Pre existing conditions enroll in ObamaCare, this stock should climb.

Initial problems with ScientX acquisition caused large decrease in price. Recently added former CFO of J&J-- probably the best managed company in the space. The ScientX acquisition gave the company significant penetration in ex-US markets which should be beneficial given dollar weakness.

I simply used the screener to identify 1-star companies with the highest 52-week gain. The 1-star rating should mean they are bad companies and the 52-week gain should mean they are overpriced. We’ll see how it works!

Alphatec Holdings, Inc. (Alphatec) is a medical device company focused on the design, development, manufacturing and marketing of products for the surgical treatment of spine disorders. Spine surgeons form their basic customer base. Its principal product offering includes a variety of spinal implant products and systems comprising components, such as spine screws, spinal spacers and plates.

The financials of the company indicate that its growth momentum is intact. Its top line grew by 74% in fiscal 2006. However the net loss widened due to higher operating expenses which was mainly due to one-time severance charges, higher selling costs and commissions on increased volume.

The company acquired Cortek Inc in September, 2005 to enhance the depth of its product portfolio. Alphatec product portfolio has both depth and breadth and hence the company seems to be well positioned to emerge as a potent player in the $ 3.3 billion spinal surgery market. Besides U.S, the company also operates in Japan which with favorable demographics i.e. higher percentage of older population and higher purchasing power is offers scalable opportunities.

The company came out with its IPO in the first half of 2006 and since then its shares has severely underperformed the market. It has declined by more than 50% since then mainly due to risk aversion. However, given the fact that it has a robust portfolio in a vertical where demand elasticity is very low. Its management bandwidth to handle growth seems to be satisfactory and relative valuation seems to attraction it can outperform in the medium term.
