Think of it as a sort of Canadian mining version of BRK with substantially more upside. On a sum of parts this "project generator" is currently a little undervalued if not spectacularly so on their assets of royalties, shares, and $25M stake in Van Eedens fund. The optionality in valuation comes from their massive iron ore development projects in particular Kami which they own a minority share of but more importantly a 3% royalty off the top on any future revenue. Given that this project looks to be going ahead (a Chinese steel maker made a large investment this week and the mine is close to close to four other operating mines so location is favorable) in mining friendly and legally stable Canada the royalty once in full production (this will take some years of course) will literally be worth billions. Altius has other long term embedded call options too but Kami is the most certain to bear fruit. The current market cap is $350M.

They lease out properties in Greeland for mining. They collect royalities from the profits. There are all kinds of precious metals in Greenland, and the potential here is unlimited. They don't have to supply cash for the mining, they collect cash. If gold goes up, if precious metals go up, or become scarce, this will go higher.

This company has over $5 Canadian tangiible cash assets per share and a valuable portfolio of mineral properties. I bought 1000 shares today at $5.50 US. Its nickel royalties off the Voisey Nickel project largely fund it's operations and it has a valuable porfolio of joint ventures (and holdings in junior developers with whom it has joint ventured).

Given their cash position, it's hard to see how why this stock won't beat the S&P over the next few years. Most of their properties are in the early to mid development stages so I think it could take a couple of years for things to really get cooking but for the kind of returns I envision, I think it's worth waiting.

Outstanding record of value creation. I wish I'd known more about this company when I plunked down money for inferior prospect generators.

Experiment time... I will pick whatever stocks that are on the cold 5 star list on the last trading day of each month. There is no research involved other what is on the cold 5 star list at the end of each month. Each pick will be for one year. Lets see where this goes...

This is one of my favorite stocks that I've owned for a while now and forgot to add it to CAPs. I own it on the canadian exchange however.

Reasons I like it. Prospect generator, smart with capital, initializing share buy back, options for employees at $28 (11/27/07) they care about shareholder value, and of course the refinery.

Do your research on this one and buy on weakness.

Altius is professional grade, no doubt. They are acquiring land and mineral rights with pace and savvy. Not only is shale extraction showing more promise from advances in technology to make it a viable venture, Altius' leadership has had the requisite foresight of greats like Berkshire Hathaway to stay ahead of market and industry trends. So much of a company's viability is drawn from its ability to discern trends from the seemingly erratic posturing of human nature, and the management of Altius has a definite knack for it. Their Labrador and Newfoundland properties show diversified mineral bases, with nickel, copper, and uranium deposits, not to mention one of the largest oil-shale fields ever discovered.

$.02 about Uranium:
While the sensationalized conscience of many consumers about nuclear power is less than favorable, and has drifted toward the re-exploration of alternative energy sources like tidal and solar generation, nuclear energy remains the most persistently and technologically invested of non-fossil-fuel sources. Tidal, geothermal, and solar sources, among others, are worthy of reasearch and exploration, but none can promise the power generated by exploiting atomic energy, nor can they hope to provide for the near exponential booms of the power hungry middle classes of China and India. And with the recent headway into developing a reusable derivative of plutonium, even environmentalists may soon have to check their rhetoric. The list of reasons for Uranium acquisition is long and worth a google search.

Altius has a diversified interest in minerals--most with mininmal risk due to leasing contracts they picked-up cheaply ahead of trends--and stands to benefit from further global energy demands of rapidly developing countries like India and China and their Western-influenced consumer bases.

I've praised Altius perhaps an awful lot, but I earnestly contend they have "the right stuff" to keep up with bullish excitement and buck past any bearish fear. I don't have much time to put a lot of data into my pitch, but I'm sure others on the board have got me covered in that department. To end with an obvious cliche...go short or go long, either way it's a proverbial touchdown.

Nickel one of the key ingredients of steel is at a all time high currently, therefore, any new nickel found will raise the price of nickel and of steel.

Just looked at their numbers on the link below, and they looked great at first glance. This one merits further research.
