Allied Waste Industries, Inc. (AW)

CAPS Rating:
****

A non-hazardous solid waste management company which provides collection, transfer, recycling and disposal services for residential, commercial and industrial customers.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

This company relies on landfills and tranfer stations to generate revenue. This company (and I know this first hand) is extremely overstaffed with middle management. I've never seen a company with so many management positions that can't be justified. (I can't stress that enough.) Very much a "good o...More

I like this pick in the actual market, but not here on CAPS. I made this pick in CAPS before I realized how CAPS treats mergers and acquisitions. CAPS will not convert the AW shares into RSG shares if and when the deal closes. In real life, a planned merger whereby RSG acquires AW is in process. RSG is providing .45 shares of RSG for every share of AW share acquired. At the current price, this is a good deal assuming the merger goes through. On the surface, by looking at the financials of these two independent companies this combination doesn't make a lot of sense. The value that this is going to added when both businesses are combined from, yes dare I say it, "synergies", should make this a good deal. By "synergies" I mean cost-savings and pricing power. The current expectations of the benefits (i.e. "synergies") outlined by management of this deal appear reasonable (and not overdone). Another note, WMI has subsequently made a bid for RSG. It's a smart move on their part, but I am pretty confident that it will not go through for various reasons (that is a different discussion).

What else are you going to do with your trash? You can't keep it (well not all of it) and you can't stop generating it, so you pay someone to haul it away.

Likely merger of number two and number three national refuse companies(with Republic Services. Share price exchange (.45 of Republic = $15 per share of AW) is favorable at current price and merger should create some adminstrative cost savings that would go to the bottom line. Don't own.
