Too much debt. None of the proceeds from the IPO went onto the balance sheet. The divesting company kept this money along with over 60% of the shares. Which they will be selling as soon as the cool off period expires. Too much downward pressure in the short term. I know all you Fools like water...More

Recs 0 (AWK) colonelnelson (48.65) Submitted: 8/10/08 10:29 PM : Start Price: $20.89 AWK Score: 9.45 Choosing AWK to OUTPERFORM based on the recommendation of Jack Willoughby of Barron's weekly. AWK provides infrastructure to clean and deliver water to homes and businesses across the U.S. AWK owns the pipes or other water care facilities, or otherwise contracts to manage them for other entities. The company went public in April 2008 in a poor IPO market. They have been held back by a confining rate agreement between its controlling owner and U.S. regulators. The rate agreement is soon expiring, and AWK will turn its attention to increasing its rate base. In addition to improving their revenue with rate hikes, AWK will be see their business grow as public utility commissions across the country recommend upgrades to existing pipes, management facilities, scrubbing equipment and other delivery mechanisms. AWK currently trades at approximately 16 times earnings, where the industry trades around 22. AWK also has a 4% dividend yield, so I'm taking a chance on a turnaround.
