IM GOING long on this one principally because it is a foolish MDP choice. I dont know much about banking or how to evaluate the banking industry, but I believe that the motley fool crew knows how to do that. I dont know about regulation in the industry, but I read all the stuff I could find on that and i believe that fear has priced the possiblity of the change of guard, in fact the fear has probably driven the price down for many resons. I understand that the "loan margin" at axp is better than that at some other facilities and that the exposure to "write downs" is less thatn that at some other large credit facilities.

Business travelers love the AMEX card, more locations accepting AMEX (Trader Joes and Nob Hill Stores added last year), the only credit card excepted at Costco, GREAT customer service and the best rewards credit card (Blue Card). People claim that this card is not widely accepted but this is not the case where I live (San Francisco Bay Area). I am able to use my AMEX 90% of the time. The stock price is good for a well run company with a great brand.

"Rapid growth of lending balances over recent years" in regions of the U.S. with the worst real estate declines caused greater-than-expected losses, Scott Valentin, analyst at Friedman Billings Ramsey & Co., said in a research note today. "At no point in history have consumers incurred as much debt relative to wealth." He rates American Express "underperform."

Bloomberg is reporting American Express Falls Most Since 9/11 on Net Decline.

American express is facing some problems but its nothing that time can't fix for companies like this. I say buy and hold for a few years and it will bounce back up.

News Flash... you can't live without a credit card... the last guy who tried had a heart attack and died (and he was only 24!)... You must buy things on credit, and don't worry...the government will keep sending you "stimulus checks" which will allow you to live beyond your means. It's not slavery, really, it's kinda like "self-induced servitude" just make those minimum payments and everything will be OK. Houses, Jobs, Husbands, Wives come and go, but credit stays with you for life. Hey quit reading this post and go buy something...I hear they have a new IPhone that has 4G... how do you live with yourself knowing yours has only 3G, dude, you are missing a G!... Go out and buy it now... do it for the country!
