AZZ, INC, besides having a nice short name to type, appears to me to be a possible "long". My CAPs portfolio, (fortunately not my RL portfolio) is getting too full of OB and PK equities that are fun to play around with, but not usually investor grade. AZZ was featured in this month's Hidden Gem Newsletter. While I only embrace a small percent of the 24 featured each year, I seem to do pretty well adding my own balance to the handful I do select. AZZ, INC is a little boring, (good start for a "long"), with it's electrical and component manufacturing. An item that is high margin, but not in the short description is AZZ's 20 galvanizing plants. The key play here is the Electrical infrastructure that is readily agreed by pretty much all to be woefully inadequate. Whether the companies who own it upgrade it, or whether the Government steps in, the grid cannot continue to be ignored. AZZ appears to be well positioned to hold their own in this recession and capitalize with any boost in spending. For now, backlog is down and with most companies, earnings are being crimped. AZZ should be able to hold at these levels. Cash is increasing rapidly while debt is holding at the same $100 Million they've owed for several years. Cash flow is very good, while book is only 2.0. Profit margins are holding at 10% with operating margins at 18% with double digit ROE. With a P/E of 10, (Forward at 11), it appears to me a relative safe investment. Motley Fool Hidden Gems covered some other attributes and this appears to be a call worth further research.

Industry should benefit in 2010 from infrastructure projects.

PE 10.1 vs industry 20.1, 3 yr Rev growth 30% vs ind 10%

Moderate debt.

Owned previously and sold @ $38....due diligence leads me to a double dip. (I must like the zinc :>) )

Good stock to snap up at bargain prices. It should bump up nicely once our new green jobs kick in, give it a year or two to mature in value.

Solid, small company that should benefit from equipment sales to upgrade electrical distribution systems. Galvanizing business may be hurt badly by short term economic disaster, however overall company likely to come out ahead.

AZZ's Earnings revisions, Operating Margins and Return on Equity are through the roof. Earning's Momentum, Growth and Sales Growth all are above average and indicate a really good possibility of earnings surprises on the positive side in the future. Too boot ... They have excellent cash flow. Great place to put some money...
