An interesting company with various assets, capitalizing from real estate as well as capital intensive long-term prospects for continual income. Worth a play, in my opinion, and also pays a decent enough dividend to offset some volatility. While they carry a lot of debt, they also have some impressive cash flows. The growth prospects in the long-term are in question, but I think they have opportunities to improve on that

While passive investing is the rage in large, liquid investing markets – like large U.S. stocks, active management is still appreciated in less liquid asset classes, like those that Brookfield works in. And, large institutions are increasingly interested in increasing their exposure to these types of alternative investments. This should allow Brookfield to continue raising fee bearing capital (currently $103 billion, up 15% over the past year)

Also, Brookfield has a strong history of generating returns. This helps attract new assets from clients, and it suggests that the $30 billion invested on its own behalf will increase significantly over time. Here’s return data by area: opportunistic real estate (2006-2015 vintage, 23% gross IRR), private equity (2001-2015, 23%), core real estate (2004-2013, 14%), infrastructure (2006-2016, 15%)

Through Brookfield Asset Management (which doesn’t require K-1 filing, though its subsidiary LPs do), investors can gain access to infrastructure, energy and real estate projects not broadly available to individual retail investors. That brings significant diversification benefits along with potentially higher returns. The company also pays a 1.5% dividend (7% average growth in the past 5 years).
