A world-wide leader that has been punished by the overall market. BASF will bounce back.

I like the opportunity to buy what I think is a solid business in a very depressed market. I think this is a great long term value play, but the economy presents real challenges near-term and its decision to delist in NY a while back and trade on the pink sheets makes liquidity / transaction costs a drag.
Disclosure: No real money position; will take a long position when competing priorities dictate.

At the moment the only German blue chip, I'm putting real money in it

The best run chemical company, period. Will always beat its peers.
Recs
shareholder value oriented: long history of share buybacks, modest but steady increase of dividends, open communication with shareholders, definitively not a multibagger but a stalwart, boring enough to be reasonably priced.

This solid company is beaten with the whole market under pressure. The weakening EURO will have an negative effect on the price in USD, but on the other side it will strengthen the reuslt as BASF is an export oriented company.

High dividend yield, solid earnings, great company with great products. Just the kind of defensive play needed to weather the storm.

Experiment time... I will pick whatever stocks that are on the cold 5 star list on the last trading day of each month. There is no research involved other what is on the cold 5 star list at the end of each month. Each pick will be for one year. Lets see where this goes...

BASF, the world's largest chemical company, declared on 6/19/08 plans to buy 3.0 billion euros(4.81 billion US ) of its shares by 2010. The company had previously announced on March 4th, 2008 a 2:1 stock split. BASF posted sales of €58,0 billion in 2007. Founded in 1865, the company has 95,000 employees on five continents. The company operates in 5 segments: chemicals, plastics, agricultural solutions, functional solutions, and performance products. The company pays a handsome dividend as well. This is a company with strong fundamentals that is primed for growth, a large muti-faceted corporation involved in several sectors that should outperform in the coming years.

This company does it all, and most of their business is in line with the next direction the world exconomy is taking, so their services will be necessary for expansion of emerging and established markets.

Here's the sad thing -- I can't make a soild argument BASF. They're one of the biggest chemical firms in Europe, they've got great management, and the stock looks like its at just the right price to get in.
Recs
High yielding stock (with dividend); 20% of net income comes from oil and gas division so they are protected against rising input costs; they are big enough to set prices; they are a good international play;

They don't make the money. They make it better.

BASF operates as a chemical company worldwide. Judging from their ability to survive through bear markets, they do more than dabbling in Chemicals, Plastics, Agricultural Products and Nutrition, Oil and Gas. It also conducts science classes for kids and helps society for Free!. No points for guessing why I recommend it.
