BBL very favorable to BHP for a long-term US investor

Inflation, and demand coupled with good management will drive BBL higher, outperforming the general market.

Exposure to commodities is a must for portfolios as inflation really gets going in the next decade or so. BHP's P/E of around 6, solid dividend yield of over 4%, payout ratio of 0.22, modest debt load (debt/equity of 0.45), and strong earnings growth make this a good entry point IMO.

BHP is in essential basic raw materials supply business. Under the worst of circumstances people must have energy (coal oil natural gas) tools (iron) and medium of exchange (gold). An investment in BHP can only grow with time. One has to be patient!

Those far off distant countries you learned about in 6th grade geography- they want to live like glorified Americans, that takes resources

Great exposure to commodities, especially iron. A huge company: market cap is 67Bn, PE ratio 7.4, PB ratio 1.2, dividend yield 3.5

Commodities, Commodities, Commodities. The rapidly expanding third world appetitte and the US is on the rebound.
This company that mines and supplies these commodities will do well.

I feel a little silly giving this one a red thumb, but it is purely a play on market valuation. For the company and its industry, I am all green, baby. However, everybody and their brother feels the same way I do (commodities! China! money!), and this is dangerous, mostly because BBL is a big name in this area.
Currently, it is trading at 32.57 times earnings, compared to a sector average of 17 times.
Investors have overvalued this stock, thanks to its strong cash and management positions. Unfortunately, earnings cannot keep pace with expectations; China is going to put the brakes on its economy, and the rest of the world is still FLAT growth-wise.
Expect this stock to come back to earth soon.

Very diversified in an industry that will only become more in demand.

one of the world's largest mining and natural resources companies, with major divisions in the mining or manufacture of aluminum, base metals (lead, zinc, copper, etc), iron ore, gold, diamonds, coal, manganese, oil, steel, potash and more.
this well-run company conducts a large part of its business in china, and is expected to grow that customer. with a direct natural resources pipeline into arguably the greatest natural resources maw of the next 20-50 years, BHP Billiton is positioned for significant growth.
dividend yield of over 4%, 2009 dividend increased 41% over last year's payment. company is not exploding right now, but is still doing strong business in a weak market. this weakness is temporary (the world will need BHP's products for generations) and fortunately reflected in share price.
looks like a very good time to buy, but you never know, so keep your stops close and don't ride down with the market. you can always buy back in. but at under $40 per share, i'm in.

Today, BBL inched its way up a bit. Hopefully, the demand for precious minerals as well as oil, gas, & diamonds will increase over time & cause this stock to skyrocket!

This commodities is kind of a "soup de jour" in today's market. It seems BHP Billiton has a little or a lot of something for everybody. Metals, Energy, Diamonds, and minerals. A good solid company, I think we're looking for steady growth here with few bumps. Yes, the Soup sounds real good right now!
