Best Buy Co., Inc. (BBY)

CAPS Rating:
***

The Company is a specialty retailer of consumer electronics, home-office products, entertainment software, appliances and related services.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other players to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Reported low sales of flat panel TVs and increased competiton from Walmart will result in this stock's underperformance.

As discretionary income continues to fall, so will electronics sales.

Best Buy is a well-known electronics retailer trading at a huge discount to its worth due to worries about the economy and consumer spending. Same store sales growth is estimated to be only 1-3% this year. But this is irrelevant to the future of the business. Of course the company will have some bad times, but they have been infrequent and short in duration. Since 1992, Best Buy has only had four years of 2% growth or less in SS sales. Same store sales bounced back each time shortly after that.

To see how crazy the valuation is, the average trailing P/E for any year since 1992 has never dropped below 16x. At $40 per share, the trailing P/E is 12x. Growth has slowed for Best Buy since the go-go days of the past decade, but growth has not stopped, which is essentially what the market is telling us with such a scornfully low multiple. On a discounted cash flow basis the market is predicting Best Buy will grow at 3% in perpetuity, which is pretty crazy given it plans to grow revenues by 15% annually over the next five years.

This is your chance to own a dominant retailer at a bargain basement price. $40 per share drastically undervalues this business.

BBY is going to hurt...here is why...

--Bad economy forces consumers to give up luxury goods--IE. electronics.

--To save on trips and find value prices, consumers go to WalMart and other major supercenters.

--Wal Mart, Target, Costco are becoming incresingly competitive and agressive with thier electronic strategies. For this reason, consumers take note while they are doing their "bargain shopping" at these locations.

--Over time, consumers will establish thier rapport with TGT, WM, or COST instead of BBY and BBY's organic growth will fall.

--Wal Mart has expressed interest in getting into the Services game. This will certainly take a chunk out of Geek Squad.

Therefore, over time, even in a rebounded econonmy, BBY will not rebound. Its a good company, a good business plan, a good fundamental, and has a good strategy. But I'm afraid its going to be a victim of this terrible economy unless we can get out of it very very very soon.......
