Brown-Forman Corp (BF-B)

As this rally matures, I think it is a good idea to add some stable stocks to my portfolio. Brown-Forman fits the bill nicely. I found this stock with a screen that looks for companies yielding over 2% and demonstrating year over year earnings growth, low payout ratios and good interest coverage ratios. This screen typically trounces the S&P 500 with low volatility. As a purveyor of alcoholic beverages, Brown-Forman is a classic "stable stock". Like many other stable stocks, Brown-Forman was left behind by the recent rally. Now Brown-Forman stock seems cheap compared to its historical price levels and compared to the market. Zero risk of insolvency.

Aggressively hired during the recession

Jack Daniel's whiskey, Finlandia vodka, Southern Comfort liqueur.

ROE has not been below 15% the last 10 years and it has averaged 20% during the same period.

Jack and Coke, two companies that will never go away.

Down markets = increase in spirits and wine consumption. Diverse brand offerings and a stable of premium brands such as Jack Daniels, Finlandia, and Southern Comfort position Brown Forman to offer desirable returns in this market and going forward.

everybody drinks something so based on this rating I picked this stock. I hope it doesn't let me down.

This is one of those stocks I always have in the portfolio. In the weeks that are so bad you don't even want to look at your holdings, this is a stock that invariably makes me realize things could have been worse if I didn't have it. Nothing glitzy, but good for keeping up the morale if you allocate a continual percentage of the portfolio to it. Nice little perodic dividend too. In really strong markets I wouldn't expect it to outperform, but if we hit a long bout of stagflation I think it'll hold up quite well in comparison to the rest of the market.

This economy has me wanting to buy alcohol stocks. Jack Daniels is still going to get drank during a recession, so we might as well buy this stock as well as Constellation Brands. BTW it has been beating the S&P for a year now, so sit back relax and enjoy some good ole' Tennessee Sippin' Wiskey! CHEERS!

During what period of time has alchohol ever lost money? Even during prohibition people were making big bucks when the stuff was banned. Outperform long term with some qualilty brands and a good market model

Maker of Southern Comfort - but this is not a big minus! I find that stuff I don't like profits greatly, too refined tastes.

If all else fails, 'SoCo' can be made into rocket fuel to mine the asteroids.
