This is a bet on the oil industry rather than a bet on Baker Hughes. I consider BHI to be a better option than Schlumberger and Halliburton.

My brother works for this company and with recent oil prices, they are taking people off overtime and looking to layoff. I wouldn't recommended this stock right now but maybe in a year or so.

Consider the Rig Count published by BHI every week. The cold weather depletes a lot of gas in storage. Drilling activity is going up. Depletion rates of gas wells accelerate. New production is increasingly harder to develop. Renewable energy only accounts for a tiny fraction of our energy needs and will stay there for years to come. It looks like the economy is picking up steam.

All this combined with an undervalued price makes BHI a more than sure winner for 2010.

As oil and gas become harder to get out of the ground, the bigger more sophisticated companies in the business should prosper.
