Better than Walmart
Recs
good brands at great prices, plenty of room to expand.

room to grow hasn't saturated the market... probably a better stock to own than costco... based on P/E.

Great stock for recessions!

Saving Money is a new American way of life.
Recs
BJ's will continue to succeed while Americans continue to watch their pennies in this tight economy. Balance sheet is basically debt free. Earnings are steady. Price has underperformed teh S&P 500 by 15% in the past month. Now is a good time to buy.
Recs
Almost everyone I know who lives in the suburbs is now buying in bulk to save money. Wholesalers like BJ's should do okay in this rough climate.
Recs
discount retailer and food - only place to buy when money gets tight. excellent balance sheet, great cash position, generating free cash.
Recs
Unlike their competitors, Costco and Sam's Club, BJ's has been posting accelerating year-to-year sales growth. That makes them a good play on big box retail, which will, as a segment, almost certainly outperform most of the rest of the retail sector through next year. They were sitting on about $50 million in cash as of November, which isn't bad for a $1 billion market cap retailer at the beginning of the holiday season, and they have very little debt. 2009 will be a rough year for all retail, but BJ's is well-positioned to weather the storm and continue to grow.
Low margins are always a concern in this environment, even though that's naturally part of the business model for a discounter. Still, this business is designed with the frugal customer in mind and is no stranger to intense price competition, so they shouldn't have much to worry about. Also, they're always innovating ways to save their customers money (see their auto buying program), and customer loyalty is always going to be extremely valuable in a recession.

Safety is found in areas that are essential for humans. Food, beverages, and overall consumer personal products are just right for safe haven.

This company does very well in this type of economic environment (recession/depression)...I would say the same for all warehouse clubs...
