With Baby Boomers heading in the direction of this industry, it will be interesting to see if they have enough services to meet demand. Growth should NOT be an issue long term.
Recs
With BKD recent acquisition of Horizon Bay, making it the dominant force in the senior living industry, I expect that there will be some need for recovery, but current occupancy levels and programming indicate that profitability will continue to increase. Also expect big things out of operations with the expansion into the home health industry.

Upscale assisted living will rock 'cause "grumpy old people" need help (I got one now, there are many more coming 8^(, we here hope that Brookdale works out for Dad.

The Boomers are booming, and people have no idea how they've protected their wealth better than the current younger generation of people you see on the news everyday loosing their houses by over-extending - the generation going into assisted living already owned their houses and had their money well-protected from the crash in 2008. Assisted living is going to be huge, those thinking that people won't be able to sell their homes to move into assisted living are grossly mistaken because they think the wealth situation of these people is the same as the current losers with homes going into short sales and foreclosures, when in fact they couldn't be further from the truth.

i am looking at the baby boomers and counting on them needing help in the years to come.
Recs
Most residents in an Assisted Living facility pay their rent/lease from the sale of their home. Home prices have deteriorated significantly. With less money to pay the rent/lease, expect shorter stays and more vacanciies and lower rent rolls. To try to maintain NOI, companies are squeezing already overworked and underpaid staff even more. Expect declines in services and quality of services leading to more vacancies. When times were good, kids couldn't wait to put ma and pa into an assisted living facility. However the current economy has many folks moving back home with ma and pa because they are unemployed and struggling to pay bills.

So if you expect a decent return on your investment with assisted living stock...it ain'happening.

Baby boomer will need assisted living as they hit age 60 at the rate of too many, too fast.

Private equity possibility, nice divvy, flat chart for years with good growth and low exposure to RE issues.

I know that they don't have any net income on a US GAAP basis, but they are generating cash from operations. If you look at this from a property investment play, the "depreciation" that is recorded in net income really doesn't mean a lot, b/c it will (hopefully) be recovered from the gain on the sale of the properties. However, I don't think you ever see this potential in the financial statements, so you really have to know a lot about the company's properties to get this perspective... like some insiders might know (ala Toys R' Us and K Mart). With the large insider purchases, this makes me wonder.
All of this by the way is just a guess, and purely something I would only do in CAPS. I'm sure someone who actually takes the time to read their SEC filings may find some flawed logic in all of this, but in the meantime, I'll let the bingo chips fall where they may.
Recs
Brookdale will overextend it's purchasing of properties for another year.
