Terrible financials.

Energy are cheap again, whats will happens next ?
Fuel is the best combustible but we need to preserved it for more useful things (plastic and other chemical).
Electric car is too expensive, and have bug when it's too cold or hot ! and not enough power for bigger truck.
Hydrogen is the next generation combustible. Yes it's dangerous and very difficult to use. I think Ballard is serious and have enough experience to be one of the best in this future market.

After health care will come hydrogen push. May take a year to pull up, but when it does it will be hard and fast.

On a growth-adjusted basis, the forward PE is about 3x the industry average.

The oldest and most experienced of all the "Fuel Cell" companies out there. Unlike Medis Technologies, which develops fuel-cell powered battery-pack chargers for the consumer market, Ballard's stock-n-trade are industrial-sized products, such as engines and building generators. Time and again the company has been written off by too-smart-for-their-own-good analysts; time and again, BLDP has come out with a stand-alone generator, then engines for Mercedes transit-buses in several European countries, and then worked extensively with Ford and Daimler on prototype cars, including the FCV Focus (one of Ford's newer and growing-more-popular US models) and Mercedes-Benz F-Cell demonstrators. As gas prices and lack of domestic oil supply are going to seemingly stay where they are for the foreseeable future, talk of viable "Alt-Energies" will push BLRD to the forefront because of its tangible development and usage history. No other company in any of the other "Alt-Energies"--not wind, not solar, not ethanol--is not only the means but also the end. Oh, and for those of you who bought into the original knock against hydrogen fuel cell technology: 1) It wasn't the hydrogen that made the Hindenburg blowup; 2) Gasoline is combustible at a much lower degree temperature than hydrogen (495° F for gas, to 1085°F for hydrogen).

Growing market for FuelCells. Alternative energy in high demand.
Recs
Fuel cells for busses and other applications. Alternative energy should benefit from high gas prices.

This old player may have found its nich in the forklift business. Buy it around 4 then sell it around 5 it seems to channel in that range.

Ballard Power Systems, Inc. engages in the design, development, manufacture, and sale of hydrogen fuel cells for materials handling, residential cogeneration, and back-up power applications worldwide. The company primarily offers stationary fuel cell systems for residential cogeneration systems, for original equipment manufacturers and system integrators for back-up power and materials handling applications, and for use in transit buses and other automotive applications.

Fuel cell technology is impractical because of the sheer bulk and and prohibitive cost. Thumbs down.

Any kind of new order will drive a short-term spike in the stock price. FCEL just experience such an event -- why can't Ballard? I like the chances considering Ballard is based in Vancouver/Burnaby, the Pacific Northwest prides itself on being leaders in the implementation of green technologies (even when they aren't cost effective), and it wouldn't surpise me if the Vancouver Olympic Committee comes up with ways to give various alternative energy sources a bit part in the 2010 Winter Games production (you know, when money is no object). Come on, short-term bump!!

I feel inclined to justify myself on this one since so many are on the other side of the fence. For one, this stock has only been this low once since '96. Second, I see things improving. From '06 to '07 revenue is up 30%. Gross margin increased from 57% to 62%. They have no long term debt and the current ratio is very safe; there is no short term risk of illiquidity.
I think the macro picture is also quite good; I expect energy prices to rise and political pressure for clean, green energy to continue to escalate.
This is my one pick so far with negative earnings; we'll see what happens!

An alternative energy company providing fuel cell technology to homes, industry and public transportation.
Many units in place in Japan and are working well.

Undervalued and under-rated. This stock is getting ready to move in the second half of '08 and beyond. Get a Democrat in the White House and look out. Money to be made.
