Blackbaud, Inc. (BLKB)

CAPS Rating:
**

The Company is a global provider of software and related services designed specifically for nonprofit organizations.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Blackbaud captures its offline space well, but how long can it perform in a market that demands online transactions and community? Their online CRM is weak compared to the other CRMs that service nonprofits online. It's too bad. Blackbaud was in a strong position early to capture the nonprofit CRM m...More

One of my smarter MBA classmates went to work for this company, and as a nonprofit professional myself for 15+ years, I have consistently heard great things about this company - the only negative is always "they're too expensive". The gold standard in fundraising management software, they've branched into ticketing, point of sale, and financial services. I've been extremely impressed with their sales staff and training staff.

They got the $ sign signifying a top pick from me when I picked this in Jan '08. I believe that "the street" has been punishing them because they don't understand that the general nonprofit decision-by-committee followed by board approval process makes for a longer sales cycle than traditional software and services firms. I was also impressed by their restructuring their sales force around specific nonprofit market niches (healthcare, cultural institutions, education, etc). Their acquisition of eTapestry last year opened up the much larger market of medium-small non-profits who couldn't afford their premium services, and made a lot of sense.

Today, I'm removing that top pick $, but keeping my pick and generally positive view of the company. BLKB just announced a proposed purchase of Kintera on Friday, 5/30/08, and I'm not crazy about the decision. While I understand the impulse to grow through acquisition when the market contracts, I think that most large mergers end up costing the acquirer more than expected and have a very scary X factor - time and energy spent managing changes in corporate culture can distract from primary business efforts. Only a few companies, such as Cisco, seem to have developed a core competency in managing such changes through a long-term plan for managing change and growth through acquisitions and partnerships. I still think this is a great long-term hold, but am wary of the potential bumps in the road over the next couple of years as the Kintera acquisition takes place and its true costs are assessed.

Recent acquisitions will enhance value and cash flow over next 12-18 months. Price target of 28.

First, a disclosure - I work for this company. BLKB is the leader in the nonprofit technology industry, with best-of-breed product offerings for its core veritcals and exciting opportunities for expansion through recent acquisitions and emerging products. BLKB is prospering despite the current downturn in the economy, which normally crimps charitable donations. Nonprofit spending will likely pick up once the economy rights itself, which should mean huge growth for this company.
