The Bank of Nova Scotia (USA) (BNS)

CAPS Rating:
****

The Bank is a full-service financial institution, active in both domestic and international markets. In Canada the Bank provides a full range of retail, commercial, corporate, investment and wholesale banking services.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Scotia Bank, or Bank of Nova Scotia, appears to have resisted the US led rush into creative financing. Scotia has extensive operations outside of the english speaking Americas. The branch in Haiti is where I heard of it originally.

Conservative Cdn bank with somewhat more risk in their Mexican subsidiaries. Has branches/subsidiaries in Lat Am and Caribbean countries with the rational exceptions of Venezuela. Was caught by the Argentinean mess but is now out of there.
Expect that they will pick up intl operations from US/EU banks that are currently suffering and need cash.

Canadian banks likely wary buyers
* 30 Sep 2008
* excerpt from National Post
* BY JOHN GREENWOOD

«Canadian banks are in good shape compared with their U. S. and European counterparts but they are growing increasingly concerned about potential impact from a slowing domestic economy as well as exposure to troubled assets whose value continues to plummet.

“I don’t think there’s a big appetite for U.S. assets right now,” said another analyst who asked not to be named.»

The Canadian banks are in a oligastic industrie, so I am not scare of the impact that the slowing economy on their earnings.They are certainly a lot safer than those american banks.
