Did you see the opening episode of Hawaii Five-O? If you did then it's obvious that all the stuff they are blowing up will need to be replaced. As long as they don't blow up any banks then Bank of Hawaii should do well with increased an increased loan ratio. Secondary, did you see those surfing scenes. I predict a housing boom in Hawaii, perfect weather and bikinii's.
Seriously, the Bank of Hawaii has held it's own very well as a regional bank. Dividend and net income remained very stable the last two years. The 3.9% dividend should help keep this one propped up. It's 18% off the artificial April High. While it's not "booming" it's fairly solid near these levels. Adding branches, some insider buying. Profit and Operating Margins stellar, (Profit Margin (ttm): 28.84%, Operating Margin (ttm): 46.59%)
Book 'em Dano!

Let me precede my pitch by saying that I do not understand all of the funny intricacies of the banking industry. They can do things with numbers that hardly anybody can understand. I understand the simple numbers and that's what I am basing this pick on.
Bank of Hawaii is a regional bank operating, as you may have guessed, in Hawaii and the Pacific region.
Earnings seem to have made a turn for the better after trending downward for a year and a half. Revenue managed to stay mostly flat since it fell from the first quarter of 2008 peak, although it just put in it's highest numbers during that time in this most recent quarter. The dividend is solid (4.1% with a 60% payout ratio) and has been growing thoughout all of this past year's banking mess.
BOH did not take any TARP money as that was geared more towards the larger banks. In 2007 BOH had actually put into action a plan to shore up their financial situation. So while the big banks were setting themselves up for trouble by doing all kinds of crazy "banking", BOH was tighening the reins so they wouldn't run into the problems that later on in 2008 wound up plaguing the big banks. As people started pulling money out of the stock market and putting it into more secure bank accounts, BOH adjusted their accounts to make sure that they would remain at the top in their region by making some non interest paying accounts start paying interest and other such methods.
Now that I feel all of the quick, easy money has been made in the market over the last year or so, I am taking a more conservative approach, so that if the market goes down or sideways I will benefit by being in more stable companies. If the market is just taking a breather before going still higher, I will still get my 4.1% dividend to help me keep up.

Bank of Hawaii is very solvent, the dividend is safe and they have declined the TARP program. This is a well run regional bank that will survive this mess and come out stronger.

If you're bold enough (crazy enough?) to get back into the market right now, regional banks is arguably a good sector to dive into. I'd continue to avoid the major banks like the plague though.
Well run regionals should be some of the first companies to begin to prosper, before the general economy turns even. BOH is one of the top regionals on my list. Very good debt to equity ratio, nice yield, nice PE, well positioned in its market, no hint of some of the mismanagement that has taken down the majors. From all appearances, a well run bank.
BOH should be able to tap into the cheap government money (at close to zero percent) and name their rate in return . . . 6, 7, 8, 9%, whatever. BOH should flat out kill it.
I'm still on the sidelines for now, but when I'm in, I'm going long on BOH.

great bank in a great area unfairly beat up, div, at under 38 this stock is a steal and collect a div while you wait for appreciation

Everybody hates banks. I even hate banks. BOH is really a doughnut shop (heavy on the dough). Hawaii has avoided the meltdown thus far. BOH didn't die so it must be getting stronger (so I'm either Niche or just Itchy - we'll find out).

Banks recommended as "solid" fundamentally.

Underrated Bank stock.

Hawaii is giving HUGE tax breaks to businesses that re locate. Good business lending will increase, as well as positive real estate demand. Theres only so much space there!
