The strongest, safest company money can buy. Unfortunately it takes a LOT of money.

Buffett absolutely thrives in an environment like this one, and is finally putting all that cash to good use. The current valuation assumes only a very small "Buffett premium" for a company that is "built to last" and will outlive said premium. In some ways, this may be a safer investment vehicle than US Treasuries...

I've actually got mixed feelings about Berkshire-Hathaway.
First, the good part. It owns a number of powerful and highly profitable businesses, and has serious equity stakes in numerous others. It has huge internal diversification, financial strength that's second to none, and a superb corporate culture.
So what's the problem? The problem is Warren Buffett. Not the eventual transition. Not the risk of the as-yet unknown future leadership of BRK. That'll be fine. Warren Buffet himself.
Am I crazy? I don't think so. Warren Buffet has been a brilliant investor, no question about it. But today he's an old man. At some point, he might fall prey to aged senilitiy. It's a disease that happens to people, and we've got no assurance that it won't happen to him. So my worry is--what decisions will he make as he becomes senile before stepping down or being removed from his position, and how will they affect the company?
For that reason, while I'm happy to own small amounts of BRK indirectly, through mutual funds or other companies, I would be very uncomfortable with putting any significant amount of my funds directly into Berkshire-Hathaway.
But what about the day after Warren Buffet? I think Berkshire-Hathaway stock will tumble dramatically when WEB steps down or dies. At that point it'll possibly be a huge buy.

Every portfolio should own some Buffett, simply because he is a great diversifier. There is no one like him... and after this storm passes... there may be no more financial companies (especially with AAA+ credit ratings) to compete with him!

Past history may be no guarantee of future performance, but those investors with cash will pick up huge deals over the next few years. The only problem Berkshire Hathaway seems to have is finding a place to invest a large chunk of its cash.
Recs
Buffett has been buying up large quantities of stock throughout this whole financial crisis. He has gotten great deals, especially with GS. BRK-A helps investors get part of that same deal through Buffett.

Good ol' Warren, I just love him!

What fear! Locked in a positive gain due to massive negative market return ... and I am in again at a price 15% lower yet again.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Markets are going crazy right now with Lehman Brothers in bankruptcy, AIG being given a huge $75B loan and Morgan Stanley being pushed to a corner from all the fear. Merrill Lynch has disappeared under Bank of America.
And at this very moment, Buffett will be at his element.
