**

The Company provides car and truck rentals and ancillary services to businesses and consumers in the United States and internationally.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other members to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

The debt is scary. I worry about this balance sheet. A lot of the non-current assets are cars and trucks, which probably don't have even a fraction of the resale value as they do on their books. CAR is currently VERY undervalued. In fact, it is a ripe takeover target - the stock closed today (8/27) at $7.75 - with just over 100M shares outstanding, it's current market capitalization is under $800M. A takeover bid, with a 30%-40% premium, would take little more than $1 Billion.

I think I can show why a takeover bid at that price would not only be highly profitable, but even how the purchase could be structured to be self financing.

If anyone reading this is in the M&A world with a firm that could put together the required financing, and would like to learn how, please respond to this post with contact information.

This has a very low forward PE for a company that doesn't look like it is experiencing especially dangerous headwinds (not a financial!). I'm bullish on the 1-3 year timeline.

Car hit rock bottom on 7/7/08. Since then the stock has been on a steady recovery with nearly 100% gain in the last four weeks. Also, the new slate of board of directors and a new direction, we have already seen cuts in employment and repurchase of own stock. I believe the stock will be $12-$14 by the end of the third quarter.
