This is a solid bank. I am currently a customer, and have been very impressed with their service, lack of absurd fees, impressive on-line banking security, and the breadth of products that they offer.
The company is obviously run in a very stable, consistent, and conservative manner, with an interest in cutting costs.

conservative lending policies, took no bail out funds,

Some of these banks may be going to zero, but at this point the upside potential for the survivors is looking attractive.

Same family ownership, conversative and good bankers. Great track record of earning and divdends. A very safe stock to own during these tough economic times.

Friend works for this bank. They're far more conservative than most. Credit standards sound far superior to basically every other bank I know of. Without really studying the numbers and just listening to an insider, this looks like a jewel in the banking-sector dumpster.
Recs
Has not requested bailout money due to current stable financial condition and adequate reserves that should provide stability over the long term.

Commerce Bancshares Inc. is the holding company for Commerce Bank, which operates in approximately 360 locations in Missouri, Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma and Colorado.
And I've been banking with them for years.
They're a conservative regional bank who should avoid much of the sub-prime mess. Unless the country slides into a pretty severe recession they should be fine.
I'm quite confident they'll outperform their sector. Will they outperform the S&P 500? I'm going to go out on a limb and say they will.
Recs
Commerce is a tightly-held company based on a history of pride and steady performance.
Commerce seeks stability and measured growth.
Recs
limited growth potential unless they become a buyout target
Recs
steady and predictable low cash dividend with annual stock dividend. Company buys back stock to cover dividend so no dilution.
