CAPS Rating:
***

Licenses electronic design automation software, sells or leases hardware technology and intellectual property and provides design and methodology services throughout the world to help manage and accelerate electronic product development processes.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other players to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Cadence owns the best IC mask design software. Bottom line improvement over the next 4 quaters contines the resurgence.

Cadence is one of those companies that can't get out of it's own way. Their bid for Mentor Graphics was clumsy and ill-timed plus they offered too little to appeal to MG shareholder's. Magma is a much stronger up and coming player in the ASIC arena. Cadence wanted Mentor Graphics for their Electronic Board Level design tools that are far better than what Cadence offers therefore they should have offered at least 3 to 5 dollars more to buy MG. Cadence's stock price will continue to muddle along and will underperform the S&P 500 in the next two years.

This was highlighted in Schwab's, "How to Bottom Fish," Feb 2008. Also was highlighted recently in Morningstar. Not to sure of this Co., but testing it out in CAPS.

One of the leading providers of chip design software. Increasing complexity of semiconductor chips continues to drive need for more sophiscated design software. Switching to a business model which allows customers to buy what they need now and add features as required, versus pruchasing a complete software package. New business model causing some near-term pain, but the long-term growth story remains solid.

Morningstar is pitching this company (http://news.morningstar.com/articlenet/article.aspx?id=24017... saying that they have a nice moat and that customers are locked in due to the high cost of switching to competitors. They state CDS is the industry standard, that they are undervalued, and that they estimate a 25% return over the next 3 years. Sounds good enough to me.

Had bad earnings, even worse guidance, stock tanked. Ahmet Okumus (successful hedge fund manager) likes enough to hold as his largest position.
