Central Fund of Canada Limited (USA) (CEF)

CAPS Rating:
*****

Provides an investment alternative for investors interested in holding marketable gold and silver related investments. Invests primarily in long-term holdings of gold and silver bullion.

Rating a stock in CAPS consists of three components:

Your call - Will this stock outperform or underperform the S&P 500? Successful picks are measured in terms of whether or not you were correct and by how many percentage points.

Your time frame - A guideline for other players to see whether your thinking is short or long-term. Time frame is also used to calculate the stock rating, but is not used in the scoring of your pick.

Your pitch - Here's your chance to offer more detailed thoughts, analysis, concerns, or the rationale behind your call. The pitch is optional and may be added later.

Each time you rate a stock, CAPS updates the community intelligence for the company, which may or may not change its CAPS rating. For more information, visit the Help tab at the top of the page.

Great affordable way to hedge against the devaluation of the dollar, thanks to our over-extended government. I've been happy with the decision. A few hundred shares of these sit in my portfolio. I like this more than GLD and SLV.

Central Fund of Canada is a closed-end fund that holds actual gold and silver bullion. They have existed since the mid-1960's. Not only is this an investment in physical metal, but it is a play on the Canadian dollar. Unlike the other ETFs (GLD for example), CEF does not lease out its bullion, and there is no "paper gold", which can be manipulated downward.

Testing out a portfolio of smallish-cap 5-star stocks found using the CAPS screener. All picks have at least 50 allstars backing them, which should be enough to minimize star rating fluctuations. It's been less than a week, but so far so good!

Trading below it's 13 day moving average with the average trending lower.

Reading their fundamentals I find their 5 yr. dividend growth to be 0.0% and their indicated annual dividend to be one cent.

Nothing for me to get excited about.

Clicking "Beat this Stock!" will bring you to a company with a higher rating than the one you're currently viewing.

Even though CAPS shows only one- to five-star rankings, behind the scenes, all companies in CAPS have a distinct numerical ranking. In other words, there is a No. 1 stock in CAPS and a worst-ranked stock in CAPS. When you arrive at the top-ranked stock, clicking "Beat this Stock!" will cause the page to refresh.

That is, until there is a new No. 1 stock!
