Stock has already made a good bounce off its bottom. Only a matter of time before coal makes a come back. It's not a matter of if only when.

The current management has thrown away $ 9 billion in cash & 85% of the market cap. They need to be removed. Casablanca will be successful on July 29th. There is limited downside because Casablanca's pressure has forced some reduction in capital spending & the spotlight will prevent the management from doing deals with the bankers they hired to protect the $millions in future perks & bonuses they wish to allocate company capital to.

Falling iron ore prices. Negative free cash flow means they will likely cut dividend entirely soon. Reducing capital expenditures to preserve cash. This is a row boat with a bunch of holes and management has one bucket trying to keep the water out. Easy underperform.

Cliff is a company in disarray. It is time for a hostile takeover. Casablanca Capital has been unsuccessful in getting management to do anything other than destroy the company. It is now cheap and a hostile takeover will be necessary to clean out the waste.

I have no idea truthfully on this one. My track record is poor on these kind of picks. Take a look at my PKX, WLT, and X picks. So things I know this I don't.

Stock price below book value, apparently for no good reason. Without further examination I'm looking at this one as a cigar-butt investment.

The fundamentals speak for themselves.
Casablanca's involvement is just a large bonus.

Price Target: $42-48 within 2 years.

Low trailing P/E. Low P/Bk. Reasonably low debt to equity. Low EV/EBITDA. Good dividend with low dividend payout ratio.

Has emerged from rough year with a well capitalized balance sheet that positions it to have great run if iron ore prices stay decent. Great value buy currently trading at very low multiples

The market is acting as though this company is dead. Meanwhile, steel and coal are simply exhibiting typical industry cyclicality. However, the irrational frenzy continues . . . CLF is currently the most % shorted stock of the S&P 500 (25% of the float). For a stock trading at 0.6x book value and using minimal leverage. CLF has already taken abundant writedowns ($1.1 billion in 2012), so that's not a risk. There's a lot of volatility with this stock; expect to see a classic short squeeze.
