I think it will spike after digital conversion while folks take advantage of intro offers, then tank, when they see where they can get digital for free. Buy, go short and say bye.

Just cancelled my Comcast TV service. Hulu.com and comedycentral.com made their service unnecessary, and I'm tried of paying for channels I never even watch.

Verizon Fios is big but Comcast is cheaper. More people don't care about cutting back on their television till they are REALLY hard pressed = less business for this? It is really a toss up.

The monopoly in my area. Customer service is wretched (putting it mildly) and they charge for just about everything they can think of......and a lot. Verizon just got approved for a franchise license so this should have Comcast looking at new ways to keep their current customers........like lowering prices. Will be intersting to see just how much of an effect Fios has on this, but I am already considering switching.

Downturn in housing market will hurt customer growth. Additionally, FiOS competition is taking 20-30% of all Comcast customers in areas in which it activates service. CAPEX spending was put on hold in 2008 in order to help achieve Cashflow. Without investment in an aging infrastructure, continued service problems will drive more and more customers to U-verse and FiOS. Company is streamling with layoffs of more than 1000 employees in 2007. However, with 90,000 employees, that's still a whole lot of redundancies and expense.

my husband has interviewed there twice and each time was told there had been "hiring freezes" right after his interview. Plus they have yet to hang a sign on their new building in Philly. two bad signs.

Comcast is set to go the way of the recording industry. Look for lower demand for cable tv as people move to the internet for downloading entertainment content. Comcast sees this happening and has started to cap internet usage for their customers. However I believe this action will lead cities that only allow Comcast to operate in their jurisdiction to allow more competitors into the local marketplace creating downward pressure on cable revenues as well. Granted this will take years and years to play out but the writing is on the wall. Many industries have seen the internet change the playing field. Cable tv is next.

This has been an unsuccessful "short" in CAPS for me in the past. But the monthly Internet usage caps? Come on, people. Upgrade infrastructure (that's your JOB, this is what you DO), don't punish customers. This is what drives me crazy about some of these old-fashioned, semi-monopolistic "service" companies. Their customers are their life's blood and they choose soaking them for all their worth every chance they get instead of investing in their infrastructure or innovating. Lame.

I was a new customer, was sold services that were not available, installation had problems, 3 service calls, then was CHARGED for a connector that did not solve the problem. Gusee what - no longer a customer.

Here goes:

1.Free television programming is avaliable over the internet (with limited commercials). NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX, ESPN... just to name a few. Cancel your TV service and save yourself $70 a month. Or at some point, Itunes, or Netflix will just have all the stations streaming and you can do it then.

2. Do you know anyone who has a lan-line at there home in at least a semi-populated area that is under 25? They don't exist.

3. Eventually employers will catch on to the wireless move & provide mobile service to their employees. Easier to contact employees at all hours.

4. Terrible customer service.

5. Union workers.

TechCrunch sez Comcast is looking to buy also-ran social network Plaxo. Why? MySpace has had issues with monetization. No obvious synergies with their cable or TV assets. Sign of desperation.

Comcast is a company with a monopolist attitude: high prices and low on service. Until recently, that may have been OK because they had a monopoly. But with competition from satellite TV and IP TV over fiber being real, they must change their attitude. This means lower prices and better customer service. Having dealt with them, and knowing a few people who work for them, I don't believe they can do it.

In the past Comcast has been able to dictate many of its terms. The concumer has more choices and those choices include equal or better service at a lower price. Also understand that current senior management methods may not be as successful as prior leadship.

According to recent news, Comcast has just received letters from the FCC questioning their practice of interfering/delaying/censoring internet traffic.

For the non-geeks out there, the issue centers on a file-sharing protocol call Bittorrent. The RIAA and MPAA have been claiming that this file-sharing system is mainly used for piracy of copyrighted content.

True or now, the issue before the FCC is that legitimate distributors of files have also been blocked. One firm distributes its own films via Bittorrent, and many forms of legitimate software a passed around the same way.

Initially, Comcast denied cutting out any internet traffic. After a multitude of independent investigations by geeks, newspapers, and security researchers confirmed that it was, indeed, happening, Comcast then claimed that it was well within their right to "shape" the traffic.

Many groups and individuals have taken this up as a cause celebre over privacy and censorship. With such a high profile case coming before the FCC, Comcast will have do divert time and money to break even.

If they get fined, it could crack the financial foundations of the company. One complaint requests a fine of over $190,000 per user who could be affected.

In the end, Comcast won't go under (my humble Foolish opinion); but huge fines and the continual debate over monopolization could bruise this company from head to toe.
